Dr. Simonson answers your Questions: Vision: Understanding How Visual Deficiencies Effect Function and How to Incorporate Visual Training Concepts into Therapeutic Programs

Question #1: Subject     how to locate vision therapy in Colo Springs

Message     Hi Dr. Jen, I attended your course this past Monday and I
wanted to get a current list of places to send students/parents that
might benefit from vt. People attending the course said some of the
offices at Chapel Hills are no longer current. The course was excellent!
I enjoyed both you and Gina Gabriel and learned lots.

Answer #1:  I typically go to www.covd.org and use the find-a-doctor locator feature.  Type in the patient's zip code on the main page, or you can search by city or state under the "Advanced" search tab.

3/24/10: after a few e-mails and phone calls, I received the following responses so far:

1) Dave Timochko. O.D, FCOVD: I am interested in possibly sharing space with a Pt or ot and doing vision therapy within that group. Please let me know if you think of anyone who might be interested in this idea of sharing office space.

2) Sara Johnson, O.D.

* I also called to Chapel Hills and Dr. McMullen and Dr. Wilson are still accepting new therapy referrals.  Dr. Puckett is now exclusively in Monument, CO.

Question #2 - What can be done for children with visual handicaps AND severe developmental delays?

It will be helpful for you to know the following: depth perception, visual acuity, peripheral vision, and tracking ability.  I would recommend a vision evaluation.  If you go to www.infantSEE.org, you will find optometrists who are able to test visual skills on very young, or developmentally young children.  A good guideline for development is here: http://infantsee.org/documents/InfantSEEBackgrounder.pdf.  Another resource is www.covd.org (use doctor locator in the top right corner).

If the children have severe vision issues, I highly, highly recommend the Anchor Center:  http://www.anchorcenter.org/

As far as easy visual development exercises to incorporate into your physical therapy program, I really like the following book: Active baby, healthy brain birth - 5 1/2 by Margaret Sasse Call # 155.413   Thanks!  Dr. Simonson
